DAT file format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the DAT files comes to the following conclusion:
DAT is a very commonly used file extension and is used by many programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 5% of all DAT files belong to Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format. The files are using the common file format TNEF. TNEF is short for Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format. It is a proprietary email attachment format used by Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server. An attached file with TNEF encoding is most often named winmail.dat. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. DAT files can be up to 31 MB in size, but are often around 5 KB - 1 MB. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: IPM.Microsoft Mail.Note. A usual file name is winmail.dat. Files like these are about noname, arzn, original and sibnm.
- 2% of all DAT files are associated with Windows NT Registry Hive. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 8 KB to 1 MB. The keywords regf, ntuser, OfRg, Users and rmtm are typical for these files. An example of a file name is NTUser.dat or settings.dat. These files are attributed to class, user, classes, edge, provisioning, activation, microsoft, desktop and store.
All other DAT files (93%) have no uniform format, such as VideoCD MPEG, Skype chatsynch, Logiqx XML Format, Microsoft Internet Explorer cache, Inno Setup Uninstall Log, Knowledge Dynamics Installer project, GameMaker Studio game data archive, PDF, GZIP, ZIP, UTF-8, JSON, JPG, DOC, SQL, EXE, PNG, zlib, RAR, collation, CmnD and CroFile. These files are often connected to metadata, global, resources, sysid, text or wpsettings. Just click the "Choose your .dat file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your DAT file is.

How to solve problems with DAT files
- Associate the DAT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open rich text email attachments. Because only the current version supports the latest DAT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Exchange Server update.
- To make sure that your DAT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DAT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
