Opening a GPL File
The GPL file type is primarily associated with GIMP.
What is a GPL file?
Primary Use: GPL files are mainly used as GIMP Palette files. They store color definitions as plain text, with a header (often reading 'GIMP Palette') followed by a list of RGB values and optional names. You can open these files with GIMP or any text editor.
Other Uses:
- Geocaching Pocket Query List – A format used by GeoPrinter for managing geocache query data. Visit the Geocaching Page for more.
- Gas Chromatograph Data File – Employed by Golden Software’s Surfer and Grapher projects for scientific data visualization. More details can be found at Golden Software.
- Gnuplot Plotting Script – A script format that contains commands for generating plots, as seen on the Gnuplot Webpage.
- Game Script – Used by Cyberlore Studios within the Gamebryo engine to run game scripting functions.

How to open a GPL file
You need a suitable software like GIMP to open a GPL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GPL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GPL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GPL file format details:
To view or edit GPL files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the GPL files is as follows:
An GPL file mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all GPL files are GIMP Palette files. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 440 bytes. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as GIMP Palette, Name and Columns. The file name Palette.gpl is typical for these files. Such files are related to color, colors, tags, gameboy, pallete, copper, shades, flat, game and gimp.
- 4% of all GPL files start with the magic bytes Start-zaÄ, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 730 KB in size and range from 49 KB to 1 MB. The files contain the following words: Start-za, geoseznam, tek textu-GeoPrinter and undefined. The following filename is common: GeoPrinter.gpl.
All other GPL files (26%) have no uniform format. These files are often connected to plot. Just click the "Choose your .gpl file to view" button on this page to find out what your GPL file is.

How to solve problems with GPL files
- Associate the GPL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open plain text files. Because only the current version supports the latest GPL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available GIMP update.
- To make sure that your GPL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GPL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
