Opening a GPS File
The GPS file type is primarily associated with GPX viewer/ProTool/GPSS World.
What is a GPS file?
This file type is not tied to one single use. An GPS file can be used in several ways depending on its origin:
- ProTool configuration file – It stores system settings used in programmable logic controller (PLC) applications. Use specialized ProTool software to view or edit its configuration data.
- GPSS World simulation file – It is used to run simulation models. You would need the GPSS World simulation package to properly open and work with this file.
- GPS data exchange format – It contains geographic coordinates and navigation data. Many GPS data viewers or even a text editor (if the file is in XML format) can open it. For details on the standard, check out the specification from Topografix.
FilExt.com notes: If you aren’t sure which one you have, open the file in a text editor. Look for XML tags or a header indicating configuration data. This will help you decide which application is needed.
How to open GPS files
You need a suitable software like GPX viewer/ProTool/GPSS World to open a GPS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GPS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GPS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
