What is an LSR file?

LSR files mostly belong to Apple iTunes. An LSR file is not a single-standard format. It can serve different purposes depending on its origin.

Layered Image File: Most LSR files contain a layered image stored as a compressed (ZIP) container. They are used in Apple environments, such as with Apple iTunes and Apple Motion, to hold multiple image layers that can be edited separately. More details can be found on the Apple iTunes page.

Drone Video Metadata: Some LSR files use the MP4 container to store metadata from DJI drone videos. This metadata helps synchronize video information with editing tools. Visit the Blackmagic support page for further info.

Lab Report Data: A few LSR files are generated by lab systems as reports (LabSolutions Report) using a Microsoft Compound file format. They carry analytical results from instruments like LC/GC/MS. More information is available at the Shimadzu website.

How do you open LSR files?

You need a suitable software like Apple iTunes to open an LSR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LSR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LSR file directly in the browser:. LSR file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the LSR files produces the following result:

You will often come across the LSR file type. This predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 80% of all LSR files use the ZIP algorithm, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one LSR file. Such a ZIP file contains 7 to 13 files with names like Contents.json. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. Most of these files are 1 MB to 19 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Contents.json. Some examples of file names are 3840x2160.lsr or 2000x3000.lsr. Files like these have the following tags: cover, universal, search, artwork, tunes, normal, icon, widescreen, large and intl.
• 7% of all LSR files are using the well-known MP4 file format to store the data. MP4 is a multimedia container format used to store video and audio and allows streaming over the Internet. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 2 GB in size and range from 290 MB to 6 GB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as freeRCV2 and ftypmp41. REC_0001.LSR or REC_0002.LSR is a typical file name. Files like these have the following tags: live.

All other LSR files (13%) have no consistent format. These files are often connected to digital, poster, neverland, responses, yakusoku, captain, downton, fandome, helmet, keyart, screen, season, survey, abbey, apple, store, fowl or srgb.
