What is an RTE file?

RTE files mostly belong to Revit by Autodesk. RTE file has various formats associated with the extension.

Navigational: MobileNavigator is a navigation application used in iPhone smart devices. The routing algorithm used by MobileNavigator uses data found in RTE files. Another program called GlobalNavigator uses RTE files to create computerized maps by scanning actual printed map information e.g. physical landscapes. It also displays your current coordinates on the map as you drive or walk. New topographical representations are gradually uploaded as you move about on the map.
Encoding: There are compressed RTE files that are integrated with encryption capabilities in order to protect confidential copyrighted material from unwanted access. How do you open RTE files?

RTE file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. 65% of all RTE files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Sections and streams in the file have names like BasicFileInfo, Contents, Formats, Global, Partitions, RevitPreview, TransmissionData and ProjectInformation. The files are 3 MB to 91 MB in size, with a median of 17 MB. The file type is relatively new. Files like these are sometimes connected to template, revit, metric, stone, gabarit, systems, plan, house and wall.
4% of all RTE files store the data in the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. A typical file size is 27 KB. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, xmlns, <!DOCTYPE root>, <metadata>, http://www.sevencs.com/eglobe/route, name and author. Files like these are sometimes connected to person-related data.

All other RTE files (31%) have no consistent format, often e.g. RTE encoded data, Fugawi route format and Downloaded. Files like these are sometimes linked to route, casa, plantilla, project, floor, model, rehau or home.
