Opening an RTE File

The RTE file type is primarily associated with Revit.

RTEFile Extension RTE
File extension: RTE
File type:  project template

What is an RTE file?

RTE files mostly belong to Revit by Autodesk. RTE file has various formats associated with the extension.

  • Navigational: MobileNavigator is a navigation application used in iPhone smart devices. The routing algorithm used by MobileNavigator uses data found in RTE files. Another program called GlobalNavigator uses RTE files to create computerized maps by scanning actual printed map information e.g. physical landscapes. It also displays your current coordinates on the map as you drive or walk. New topographical representations are gradually uploaded as you move about on the map.
  • Encoding: There are compressed RTE files that are integrated with encryption capabilities in order to protect confidential copyrighted material from unwanted access. The compression is carried out by encryption programs may reduce the capacity of the files to protect the encoded content. They are encoded into the RTE file format with the addition of the extension .rte at the end of the file name. RTE files are used to safely store and transmit encrypted files over the internet or through transportation media such as digital CD-ROMs and flash drives.
  • Revit Project :It is a template of a building design. It is meant for constructing viable concepts, RVT, originating from the same idea. Mainly used in architectural plans.

How do you open RTE files?

You need a suitable software like Revit to open an RTE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RTE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RTE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RTE files:

  1. Revit by Autodesk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RTE files are often referred to as Revit cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Fugawi Global Navigator (GPS route file) by Johnson Outdoors
Fugawi is a GPS programming, route planning, and real-time GPS tracking software from Johnson Outdoors. An RTE file extension in Fugawi belongs to a route file that describes a navigation path from one point on the map to another. This file format is classified as GIS. 3. Navigon (GPS route file) by Garmin
Navigon is GPS navigation mobile app from Garmin. The app allows route planning and also provides traffic alerts and information such as speed limits. An RTE file is a route file used by Navigon that stores a single route. It is a plain text file that contains the geodetic coordinates of each waypoint in a route along with other information. RTE files are also used by Garmin GPS devices. This file format is classified as GIS. 4. OziExplorer (GPS route file) by D & L Newman
OziExplorer is a GPS mapping software from D & L Newman that allows users to load digital maps and plan routes on their computer. The software is used to upload waypoints, routes, and tracks to GPS devices and track GPS position on the map in real time. RTE files store multiple routes in OziExplorer (as opposed to RT2 files that store a single route). RTE files have the geodetic coordinates of each waypoint in a route stored in a simple text format, along with other information. This file format is classified as GIS. 5. PCBoards (routes file) by MicroSim
PCBoards is a circuit design program from MicroSim, which merged with OrCAD in 1997. RTE is a routes file for an electric circuit created using PCBoards. The file stores information about the circuit's routed connections created by autorouting. The file is dynamically updated by the autorouter. This file format is classified as CAD. 6. RTEncoder (encoded file) by Russel Cook
RTEncoder is a software utility developed by Russel Cook to encode and decode files for copyright protection. The encoding ensures that only the authorized recipient can decode and access the file. RTE is the file format for an encoded file created using RTEncoder. The encoded RTE format is native to this software. This file format is classified as Encoded. 7. WinRoute (routing table) by Microsoft
WinRoute is a tool developed by Microsoft for troubleshooting routing in Exchange Server. It connects to the link state port (TCP port 691) in Exchange Server and extracts link state routing information. RTE is the extension for a routing table in WinRoute. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: WinRoute Guide

RTE file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the RTE files looks like this:

An RTE file is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

All other RTE files (31%) have no consistent format, often e.g. RTE encoded data, Fugawi route format and Downloaded. Files like these are sometimes linked to route, casa, plantilla, project, floor, model, rehau or home. Just click the "Choose your .rte file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your RTE file is.

Technical Data for RTE File Extension

an rte project template is a special file format by Autodesk and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with RTE files

  • Associate the RTE file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open project templates. Because only the current version supports the latest RTE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available Revit update.
  • To make sure that your RTE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .RTE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
