Opening a USR File
The USR file type is primarily associated with Yamaha PSR series.
What is a USR file?
They are not designed as general files but as tailored data containers for specific devices or software. For instance, Yamaha keyboards write USR files to save user patches and custom settings. Similarly, GPS units from companies such as Navico, Simrad, and Lowrance use these files to record waypoints, routes, or trails. In some cases, these files are built on structured formats like HDF5, which offers a hierarchical data structure; you can view such data with tools like HDFView.
Other uses include storing user-defined settings for DVD recorders, telecommunication systems like Avaya IP Office, game save data, and even machine-specific parameters for devices from Yaskawa.

How to open USR files
You need a suitable software like Yamaha PSR series to open a USR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your USR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a USR file directly in the browser:. USR file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the USR files:
USR is a very common file type and is used by many programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 10% of all USR files start with the bytes 00 01 00 00 00 02 00 01 crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 82 KB to 39 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. The following keywords are characteristic: HBAM7. These files are attributed to interactive, review, ardms and exam.
- 10% of all USR files start with the bytes PSR, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 130 KB with most files being between 3 KB and 130 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as UserFile, No data and 1.00No data. The following filename is common: USER001.USR or USER002.USR.
All other USR files (80%) have no uniform format, often, for example, USRobotics firmware, HDF5, Navico, western, REDSH, File, DVDAUTH and ZHV. These files are often connected to waypoints, routes, trails, tracks, temp, password or stock. Just click the "Choose your .usr file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your USR file is.

How to solve problems with USR files
- Associate the USR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest USR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Yamaha PSR series update.
- To make sure that your USR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .USR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
