What is a WPT file

WPT files mostly belong to MapSource by Garmin. A WPT file is a template used to create WPS documents in the Writer word processor of WPS Office productivity software suite. WPT is also the filename extension of a template which WordPerfect word processor uses to create a WP document. Another type of WPT file is a waypoint created by or used by GPS devices manufactured by companies such as Trimble, Magellan, and Garmin. Although such waypoint files have WPT filename extension, they are not saved in the same format. GPS Pathfinder Office and MapSource can read WPT files created by Trimble and Garmin respectively.

How can I open a WPT file?

You need a suitable software like MapSource to open a WPT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WPT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WPT file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the WPT files:

The WPT file ending is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

45% of all WPT files are Brother Word Processor document files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are often between 1 KB and 16 KB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago. Files like these are sometimes connected to tribe, music, chap and guns.
15% of all WPT files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "92 83 01 7F 00" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 3 KB. Such files sometimes refer to letter.

All other WPT files (40%) have no consistent format, the following 7 formats can be found: Kingsoft Writer Template, OziExplorer Waypoint, Fugawi 3 waypoint format and Magellan MapSend.
