I ran into the problem of downloading and viewing an .odt file and found a free download on this page:
http://www.officeviewers.com/
I was able to view the file, then cut (or copied) and pasted the text into a word document. However, to do this, I had to first uninstall the file (because it began to open every word document as a text viewer file)
