(x) manually renaming file extentions (x) -.mpg TO .rar-

Heres what i have:

6- downloaded files in .mpg format ( Counter Strike Scrim video)

Yet im now told they are actually compressed zips/rars holding much larger
data and i need to manually change/rename the file to .rar

When i dl the 6 files they were/are originally named xxxx01.rar.mpg and so on.

Yet now sitting in my chosen dl folder they are just named xxxx01.rar and the
mini icon representing the file is THE STANDARD mpg icon ...NOT the rar icon

Please give me a little light on what the f is going on or any info will be much
appreciated and if you need any more info from me, ill be happy to explain it.

The files you have appear to be sequentially named if I read your message right. That means they are a single RAR file split into parts and so have to be combined (WinRAR will do that for you).

Are you certain that you renamed the files? Changing the file extension during a rename requires that file extensions be showing. Windows (XP at least) won't let you change the file extension if common file extensions are set to not show. So, any change would change the root name but the extension (hidden from view) would stay the same.
