From the Adobe's site (I have used the first solution and it works):

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Set the AOM file association and then start the download.

1. Choose Start > Run.

2. Type the following text in the Open box:

%TEMP%

3. Right-click the ESD.aom file and choose Open from the pop-up menu. (If you use Windows XP, select Select The Program From A List and then click OK when prompted.)

4. In the Open With dialog box, select Always Use The Selected Program To Open This Kind Of File, and then click Browse.

5. Open the Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/ESD folder, select AdobeDownloadManager.exe, and then click Open.

6. Click OK to start the download process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the download.

Solution 2: Manually start the download.

1. Choose Start > Run.

2. Type the following text in the Open box:

%TEMP%

3. Right-click the ESD.aom file and choose Cut from the pop-up menu.

4. Open the Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/ESD folder.

5. Choose Edit > Paste.

6. Drag the ESD.aom file onto the AdobeDownloadManager.exe file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the download.

Default aom file - easier solution which also works

1. right click the aom file, click properties

2. click "change" next to the 'opens with' box

3. in the "opens with" page, browse to adobe, click, and then click the esd downloader file.

4. on your desktop, the aom file icon should have changed. double click and proceed with download and installation
