Question FBW - sauvegarde.1 does nothing

Hi, trying to help my aunt in France - had to restore the pc and used the HP recovery tool to save various files. I stupidly thought you could then just pick and choose files to restore but you have to use an .exe for the fbw files. At first the "sauvegarde.1" exe seemed to start ok. There are 8 disks and it asked me to enter the last one, disk 8. I did this and it asked for disk 1 again. I then seemed to go in circles as it tried to run sauvegarde.1 again so I said no. The .exe seemed to hang at 0% on the progress bar. I then killed it in taskmgr and restarted but now it just seems to execute for a nano second and does zilch. Is there something such as a registry setting making it think it has recovered the data? Is there any other way to get these .fbw files to restore? I tried safe mode as per another thread and it made no difference. Many thanks in advance.
