Uninstalled AVG then installed newly downled version ... No difference. I still see these files created and then the PC reboots itself!

I did not make the contact with the AVG folks but note in a referenced post in this thread that two files might be involved:
C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG\avgklib.dll C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG\avgrssvc.exe I would expect that they would be deleted during an uninstall but the DLL file just might stay around. If so and the installer sees it then it's possible it won't install a new version. Also, did you restart between the uninstall and new install? If not maybe that will help. If not, then I guess the problem remains and a posting in their forum to this effect referencing this thread where MarkA says the issue is resolved might bring them back to the table. Be prepared to put all relevant information (program version, where the files are, when they appear, what's happening when they occur, etc.) into the post. http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/index.php |

I can say with certainty that the files:
C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG\avgklib.dll C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG\avgrssvc.exe (and the entire Program Files\GRISOFT folder, as a matter of fact) were indeed deleted before the install of the newest version. I also made sure to reboot before, in-between and after every step of uninstalling the old and installing the new. The same things happen. The t$m files are created and the PC self-reboots at that time. I turn off the daily AVG scan and the files are not created and the PC does not self-reboot. I am moving this to the AVG free forums at: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/re...4503#msg-94503 Thx all! |

FWIW, it looks like they want you to start a new thread in their forum as it looks like your message in the referenced thread was deleted. I'll follow along in that forum as well so I can correct any database entries here that need correcting when I find the new thread.

Well, I, too, am having a problem with T$M files in My c:\windows\temp folder.
I'm running Win XP Pro, SP2. AVG "free" v 7.5.484 AVAST 4.7 virus protection ZoneAlarm V 7.0.337.000 Spyware Doctor v 5.0.5.259 Dell Support 3.4 When Avast runs a check, I get a message about some "ad-ware generators" found in the temp folder. And it happens roughly twice a day: * if I leave the system on overnight - it happens at around 11:15 PM and then again around 5:45 AM.... * if I shut down overnight, it happens about an hour after start-up, about a minute apart. The files are ALWAYS found in a pair and no matter what I do, they are always there. I always receive two alerts from Avast about the files. The file names are ALWAYS different, but always start with the $ symbol and then 8 alpha/numeric characters and the .t$m extension. I've tried all of the suggestions that AVAST gives - to delete them; to move them; to rename them; to do nothing - and I still get paired warnings every day.... Today, when I got the warnings, I wrote down the name of the files and then went into the temp folder to find them - and they're not there... There are about 15 .t$m files in there, but none with the same name as those found by Avast. BTW, I chose "NO ACTION" this AM when Avast found the errors. The other thing I found in the temp folder that struck Me as a little odd is XRXFTPLT.exe - which, when searching, seems to be a driver for a Xerox MFP - so I haven't touched it.... but other sites list this as a potential hack/virus.... When looking at ALL the .t$m files, I found quite a few that have "digital signatures" from the company that created them - Intel, Microsoft, and others for applications I have on My system - but about 7 of them have no digital signature and no information about them.... What I guess My post and question about them is can I delete those files without any problems - or should I just deal with the Avast "warning" I get twice a day....? And yes, I have the most current AVG program and virus database - so I don't think it's all coming from issues with AVG... Craig aka LeathermanCraig |

It most likely is still their problem. I've not been back to their forum to see lately but I've seen nothing that would indicate it's not still their problem.
I've also seen nothing that says you can't safely delete the files. In fact, some people just create a batch file that runs on startup to delete the files automatically for them so they don't have to think about it. BTW, running multiple anti-virus software at the same time can also cause problems. You should probably pick one and stick with it. Two often conflict with one another since they are trying to monitor the same things. |

Thanks for this.... I'll probably delete some of it tonight - the ones that don't seem to have a signature or seem to be attached to a known source....
As for the multiple AV programs - they're both background and offer different protections for Me.... I've actually been running them both for about a year (so far) without any issues.... the AVG free edition offers some protections that the Avast system doesn't and vice-versa.... But if I ever do have any issues, you bet one will be gotten rid of....

One method I often propose to people is to copy files they want to delete either off to a CD or move to a different place on the disk and if after a week or so of normal operation nothing complains use the CD as a coaster or delete the files entirely. So, if you are uncomfortable deleting the files completely that's an approach you can take to give yourself a good feeling. CDs are cheap and if you don't need coasters they also make nice bird scaring devices hanging in the garden.

It's a late reply but I got such files, one was 2GB! and another one 1.5GB so I searched for information and I found this thread, thanks a lot.
In the AVG forum, after denying several times (even when shown the smoking gun, the t$m string in AVG files) the guy from AVG finally acknowledged that these files were created by AVG during scans and sometimes not deleted. One the thread, I notice that several messages where deleted. Probably people complaining this kind of attitude. Looks like AVG team do not like critics. On nov 9th, 2008, I (like many many other users) had a computer crashed by AVG (they deleted user32.dll). Today, nov. 14, there is still NO information in AVG site news about that, and only inside of the support forum they talk about that. Anyone can make mistakes, but it is not acceptable to deny/try to hide them for such a company. Additionaly the AVG logs (were I first looked to try to find what happened to the lost files) are binary, not readable. Great when the system is crashed and booted in DOS mode. Etc., etc. This AVG (free version) was not installed by me on this computer, and it is constantly showing "buy and register" screens. This is why, when I looked for a free antivirus, and I compared AVG and AVAST, I decided to install AVAST on my new computer. I am now happy I did it. I just regret I did not remove AVG from the older one at that time. I suggest to anyone to uninstall AVG and use Avast instead. |

AVG has no control over this forum. Deleted posts are almost always either a duplicate post (where someone has come in and just posted the entire message someone else has posted) or spam. I will control language as well (e.g., swearing) but usually don't have to.
But, my experience with AVG (free version) has been just fine. Apparently YMMV. |
