Is View[1] the file's name or file extension?

Sometimes Windows will add a [1] to a file's extension when saving for reasons I've yet to find. But, .VIEW is not a common extension for much of anything (although it has sometimes been associated with JPG images).

If View[1] is the file's name then what is the file extension; the last part of the name after the period assuming you have file extensions set to display...
