I have a movie-type file without an extension. Is there a way to find out what extension it should have?

Try running it by TrID. See links in the discussion here...
http://filext.com/faq/research_file_type.php And, also see if Gspot can find the proper CODEC... http://filext.com/faq/using_codecs_view_video.php |

I tried those, but it gave an error. My guess is because the file is too large (165 MB). Is there a similar program that can handle larger files?

Hmmm, thought Marco had fixed the "too big" error. Anyhow, the download version, run on your computer, will work with any size file.

I downloaded the program itself, but I am having some trouble locating the definition download. I see them listed alphabetically on the website, but there is now option to download all of them.
Is this what I am even supposed to do to prepare the program for reviewing the files, or am I on the wrong track? |

The download page is here...
http://mark0.net/soft-tridnet-e.html Toward the bottom are links to two downloads: TrIDNet v1.80 and TrID XML defs. One is a ZIP file and another an RAR file (why two different formats Marco?). You'll need both and the Microsoft .NET framework if you don't have that already installed (many computers do -- look for the folder Microsoft.NET in your Windows folder to see if you do). If you don't have it there is also a link to that on the page referenced. |

I used RAR for the XML definitions because is much more efficient (due to the so called solid compression that threat various files as a single stream); the corresponding ZIP would have been 4 times larger.
Thanks for helping about TrID, Bye!

I now realize my error. When I saw both the ZIP and the RAR next to each other, I thought that they were the same "packages" - just different preferences in downloading. Thank you DaBoss for clarifying that and Mark0 for providing them. Now the application is working for me.
However, the file I am working on showed on the program as being an "mp4." When I added the extension, it still did not play - giving error "-2048". My only guess is that since it was made on a mac, it can only be played on a mac. I don't know what else to think, now that I have the correct extension. |

Maybe it's just a matter of having the rights codecs to decode the content inside the MP4.
You can try to use the free VLC, that can play pretty much anything out of the box. Bye!
