Well, i found this IMG file in an old game called pax imperia. Irfanview cant open it saying its a .TIF file with an invalid extension, so i rename it, and it still cant open it. Any help would be appriciated. Last edited by Staff; 28 Nov 2007 at 12:33 PM. |

Sorry, but we don't allow download links in the forum.
Run the file by TrID and/or use the other research tips in this FAQ... http://filext.com/faq/research_file_type.php |

Sorry, can't read minds
. You didn't mention that nor say what else you did other than try Irfanview. Mentioning it was a Mac game might have helped some too.Since that's the case I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that on the Mac the file is built with two forks; one of which contains the binary data and the other descriptive information. That's often the case with Mac data files. Unfortunately, what that usually results in during a Mac to PC transfer is that the descriptive information comes across but the binary data does not; unless the proper file transfer utility is used on the Mac. This might be why Irfanview recognizes the file as a TIF file but can't read it; the TIF information is there but the binary data making up the actual image is not. Just a guess but it's all I can guess given that you've done everything else possible. |

Since Irfanview identified it as a misnamed TIFF file it could be a garbaged TIFF file in the manner I described. Irfanview was likely reading the file's header to come to that conclusion so something in the header at least looks like a TIFF image format. The IMG extension could just be a naming convention thing. Irfanview and XnView are rather famous for trying to parse the image data in a file and display it if it's possible to be displayed.
How big is the file? Knowing that would give some hints as to the probability of it being an image. Also, have you looked at the file in an editor? If so, is it all zeros or a full collection of random characters (characteristics of an image) or something else? Doing some Google searches brought up nothing of real value I'm afraid. Wikipedia has little more than a general description of the game and searching for the game name or the THQ developer name with image format brought up nothing as well. I'll admit to being a bit stuck at this point. Sorry. |

Well, the file itself works fine IN THE GAME, so i have no idea. as for how big the file is, its 3.74MB... Big. i opened it in notepad and the begining looks like THIS: http://s209.photobucket.com/albums/b...rrent=Code.png
As you can see, the lines of code are VERY long. EDIT: Also, why dont [IMG] tags work in this forum?

One of our users (Mark0) might have some insight on this so I'm going to let him comment. He's in Italy so there might be some time delay on that. He specializes in identifying unknown files.
IMG tags do work in the message body itself if you have a direct URL to the image, e.g., . They are not uploaded and served from the FILExt server. IMG tags do not work in the signature because a number of people were using them to broadcast spam and I just hate that. Editing the individual user info became a chore so I just took IMG permissions away from signatures.

I see, but why not an avatar option. besides that, does it really help considering people could just load their sigs with tons of random URLs
