Hey to all who reside as members on this forum,
Recently my step-son bought a used PC with windows 98sec installed. Here are a few specs: AMD-K6 3D Processor with 120mb ram. Also the previous owner installed another hardrive and partitioned off it D:11gigs and E:11gigs. As with any used PC there are always things missing and on this PC we have missing a "SHLDDRV.VXD" file which has everything to do with it booting up and making use out of the AMD processor. Now, the read out says that when windows boots up this file is missing and you should do either the following:remove ? application and or re-install application. This of course would be no problem if windows told you which application the file came with. Also in the read out (when first booting up the black and white text screen) someone apparently deleted this file which is necessary for windows to run as it should using the AMD processor. It is running in the DOS mode, not the console version but just the DOS slow mode where everything moves like a snail. Does anyone know how and where I can either identify or get this mysterious "SHLDDRV.VXD" file? And if I can get it where would I install it on windows 98? Any help would make this little problem disapear and my step-son would be exstatic if I could fix this. Thxs for having me on this forum and if anyone could help out I would greatly appreciate your time, 8ENINE OCTANE

If you Google "shlddrv.vxd" you get a number of forum postings about the same problem. The going theory in these forums (fora?) is that anti-virus software may remove this file for some reason. And, the going solution in all seems to be to either boot in step-by-step mode and approve everything *except* that file during startup (a slow process) or simply remove references to it from the registry. In a quick search I found nothing that would say what the file actually does but everyone seemed to think that removing it caused no problems.
No guarantees, just a summary of what others have done. |

Very quick response time DABOSS, they don't respond that quick on Lockergnome which I have been a member on for along time. Thxs I'll check it out and get back if needed.
Good response time, 8ENINE OCTANE

Response time depends on when you post. I like to sleep late and often don't get on until late in the afternoon (Pacific time). Plus, if I don't know or can't find out quickly I often don't respond at all so you're trying to draw a straight line through one data point.
But, I'll take the kudos anyhow. ![]() BTW, check to see if Panda AV was ever on the system. It might be related to that and if Panda was removed it might have removed the file but some other process which did not register the file with the system was also using it. |

PC won't reboot when restarting and won't shut-down either. The only way it will restart is only when changing virtual memory (page file). Seeing that he has 2 hardrive's sharing only 120mbs of ram I would think this could be one of the reasons that it crawls maybe not. This guy who previously owned it before has a slew of graphic and photo programs both on D: and E: drives. On C: drive he has 54% free space. But all in all it still crawls like it's beggin for more ram. If it is more ram that is needed, then he can, if this PC will allow, another 256 or 512mb stick should fix it. But if it cannot take another stick of ram then? Anybody? I cut the pagefile down to 400mb it was maxed at 1678mb or somewhere around there. I have deleted quite a few hefty programs off and have gained some space back and in msconfig I disabled alot of programs that were eating away his cpu's, nothing needed for windows to run just things like a fax program and some graphic software he had booting up everytime. But still on 98sec it moves as though it doesn't have enough ram. So is there a trade off somewhere here? Now on D: drive it's 90% free and on E: drive it's 89% free, so all the programs(most are not installed as I un-installed them) he has on both these hardrive's should I delete them(the txt, graphics, mp3's and other files associated with these programs) except for the exe's(applications), or as I said above just tell him to get another stick of ram if his PC can handle it?
