Opening an ARN File
The ARN file type is primarily associated with Autoruns.
What is an ARN file?
How to open an ARN file
You need a suitable software like Autoruns to open an ARN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ARN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ARN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ARN format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the ARN files:
ARN is seldom used as a file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 80% of all ARN files are Sysinternals Autoruns data files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 8 MB in size and range from 4 MB to 10 MB. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: ARN_. Some examples of file names are DESKTOP-361OCMH.arn or auto.arn. Files like these are about desktop and ocmh.
- 15% of all ARN files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). Sections and streams in the file are named Header, Items, LargeIcons and SmallIcons. The files are often between 1 MB and 8 MB in size.
All other ARN files (5%) have no uniform format. These files are often connected to runs. Just click the "Choose your .arn file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your ARN file is.

How to solve problems with ARN files
- Associate the ARN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open report files. Because only the current version supports the latest ARN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Autoruns update.
- To make sure that your ARN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
