What is an M8 file?

M8 files mostly belong to MindManager. M8 files are used by different applications and represent varied data formats.
In one case, some of these files are XML-based mind map files used for organizing ideas. Applications such as MindManager or similar FreeMind tools read these files to display structured diagrams.
Other M8 files, making up some, and cases, contain protein structure or alignment data. These files are used in bioinformatics and appear in outputs from tools like AlphaFold, BLAST, and MSAViewer. They hold data for sequence analysis or protein mapping.
Additional uses include gaming and graphics. For example, some are used to store texture data (such as Shogo texture or Quake 2 model skins) and some serve as maps for games like Duke Nukem 3D, sometimes labeled as Game Maker Room Files (Duke Nukem).
A smaller group, some, are video playlist files used by adaptive streaming services, for instance with the NeuLion Adaptive Streaming Server (NeuLion).

How to open M8 files

You need a suitable software like MindManager to open an M8 file. M8 is not a common file extension and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 45% of all M8 files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. • 15% of all M8 files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "02 00 00 00" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 22 KB to 88 KB in size, with a median of 88 KB. The keywords shogo are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to corvus.
