Opening a VDM File
The VDM file type is primarily associated with Outlook.
What is a VDM file?
How to open a VDM file
You need a suitable software like Outlook to open a VDM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VDM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VDM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VDM file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the VDM files:
The VDM file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in VDM files:
- 35% of all VDM files are Microsoft Windows Defender Virus Definition Module files, which are based on the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 900 KB to 50 MB in size, with a median of 8 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as !This program cannot be run in DOS mode and Rich. The file name mpasdlta.vdm or mpasbase.vdm is typical for these files. These files are attributed to mpavbase.
- 25% of all VDM files start with the bytes PKZVDM, which are crucial for this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 3 KB to 130 KB. The files contain the following words: PKZVDM.
All other VDM files (40%) have different formats. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your VDM file!
