What is a VDM file?

VDM files mostly belong to Outlook by Microsoft. A VDM file is a macro that vEdit uses to automate the process of editing/converting large text files. VDM is also the filename extension of computing system models source code written in VDM Specification Language (VDM-SL) or VDM++ in accordance with Vienna Development Method. Such VDM files are created with VDMTools integrated development environment. Another type of VDM file is a virus definition module for Defender, a built-in Windows antivirus. Defender uses a virus definition module to store information identifying known Windows threats. The iManage component of Outlook email client saves views in VDM files.

How to open a VDM file

You need a suitable software like Outlook to open a VDM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VDM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VDM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VDM file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the VDM files:

The VDM file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in VDM files:
