Opening an MGP File
The MGP file type is primarily associated with X-Mouse Button Control.
What is an MGP file?
- Game macro files – These files store game profiles and macros. They contain settings that map mouse buttons or keystrokes to specific in-game actions. Users of software like X-Mouse Button Control or similar MacroGamer applications rely on these files to automate and simplify gaming tasks.
- MapGuide packages – In some cases, an MGP file is a ZIP-based archive that packages map data and related resources for use with GIS software such as MapGuide Open Source. These contain map definitions and auxiliary files needed for geospatial applications.
FilExt.com tips: How you handle an MGP file depends on its origin. If it is a game macro file, open it using its native macro management software. If it is a MapGuide package, a ZIP extractor or the MapGuide application is needed to reveal its contents. Always back up your file before making any changes.
How do you open MGP files?
You need a suitable software like X-Mouse Button Control to open an MGP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MGP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MGP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MGP format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the MGP files looks like this:
MGP is rarely used as a file extension and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 10% of all MGP files are based on the zip format, the MGP file contains a number of compressed files. A typical number of included files is 46. Common included file names are MgResourcePackageManifest.xml. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. A typical file size is 210 KB. The keywords Library and _HEADER are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are mgp_v1_3b56a63cffa624903b4edbfe7eb51ef08a55086e.mgp. These files can be linked to layer, edbfe and cffa.
- 6% of all MGP files are based on the well-known config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 1 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: [grenade], bindedkey=[, e=10 D, e={1 down}, e={1 up}, e={2 down}, e={2 up}, e={3 down}, e={LMouse down}, e={LMouse up} and repeat=1. The file name profile_3.mgp is typical for these files.
All other MGP files (84%) have no consistent format. Often described as presets or macro. Just click the "Choose your .mgp file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your MGP file is.
