What is a 3GPP file

3GPP files mostly belong to QuickTime by Apple. 3GPP is a media container file format for storing audio, video, and text data. A video or audio file created with the 3GPP format typically has 3GP extension but some may have MP4 extension. The 3GPP format was developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as a standard for providing uniform playback and delivery of rich multimedia content over 3G, 2G, and 4G networks. Audio streams in a 3GPP file are stored as AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC, and HE-AAC as specified in the MPEG-4 Part 12 standard format from which 3GPP is derived. The format uses video streams such as MPEG-4 Part 2, MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC/H.264), and H.263. Many 3rd generation mobile phones still use 3GPP as the default format for recording video clips. Such 3GPP videos may be played with the phone's media player or a computer's media player.

How to open 3GPP files

You need a suitable software like QuickTime from Apple to open a 3GPP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your 3GPP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a 3GPP file directly in the browser:.
