What is an APM file?

APM files mostly belong to GIMP by GIMP Team. APM filename extension is associated with raster images stored in Aldus Placeable Metafile format. Such APM files contain records, commands, graphics objects, property definitions, and metadata used to render an image onto a computer screen. The structure of this APM format is similar to WMF (Windows MetaFile) format but WMF files have a preceding 22-byte header. ArcPad, a GIS mapping and data collection software stores a list of map layers and their display settings (e.g. color) in an APM file. Secure Email, a cloud based email encryption solution saves email attachment information in APM files. Alphacam, a 2D/3D woodworking CAD/CAM software saves its punch parameter macros in APM files. AutoPlay Menu Studio, a program used to create custom autorun menus and interactive presentations saves its configuration file with APM filename extension (AUTORUN.APM). Creo, a 3D product design software also stores its configuration data in APM files.

How to open an APM file

You need a suitable software like GIMP to open an APM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your APM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a APM file directly in the browser:. APM files are between 120 KB and 6 MB in size. The files contain the following words: HorzScrollBar.Visible, Left, VertScrollBar.Visible, BorderIcons, biSystemMenu, Height, Width, biMinimize, TfrmDesign, Caption, APMDataFileTPF0, Color and frmDesign_1. A common filename is Autorun.apm or Launcher.apm.
