Opening a CPS File
The CPS file type is primarily associated with Captivate.
What is a CPS file?
How to open CPS files
You need a suitable software like Captivate to open a CPS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CPS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CPS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CPS file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the CPS files comes to the following conclusion:
Files with the CPS extension are quite widely used. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in CPS files:
- 25% of all CPS files start with the bytes /** crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 45 KB in size and range from 11 KB to 120 KB. It is a modern file type. The keywords Copyright, All rights reserved, Revision, Autodesk, Inc, Date, processor configuration and post processor are typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to fanuc, haas, siemens, mill, plasma, mach, turn, generation, tormach, turning and next.
- 20% of all CPS files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The data in this file is stored in streams whose names are CGOContents, Header and Thumbnail. The average file size is 790 KB with most files being between 78 KB and 5 MB in size. Such files sometimes refer to person-related data.
All the rest of the CPS files (55%) have different formats, frequently e.g. XML, JetDB, default, ChordPulse and OPS. They are often associated with recentcalls, axis, body, wing, control, fusion, users or fire. Just click the "Choose your .cps file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your CPS file is.
