All about DMD Files
The DMD file type is primarily associated with SQL Developer Data Modeler.
What is a DMD file?
How to open DMD files
You need a suitable software like SQL Developer Data Modeler to open a DMD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DMD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DMD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DMD files:
- SQL Developer Data Modeler by Oracle
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DMD files are often referred to as SQL Developer Data Modeler developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- dB2K (web data module) by dBASEdB2K is a discontinued database development application. It used a web data module saved in a DMD file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Dungeon Map Doodler (doodle) by Dungeon Map Doodler DevelopersDungeon Map Doodler is a web application for creating doodles of dungeon maps. It saves a doodle to a DMD file. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
- OS/2 Warp (device manager driver) by IBMOS/2 Warp is a discontinued operating system for personal and business class computers. It uses a DMD file to store its device manager driver. This file format is classified as System.
- Quattro (data) by CorelQuattro (previously Corel Data Modeling Desktop) is a spreadsheet application bundled with WordPerfect office productivity software suite. It uses data saved in a DMD file. This file format is classified as Data.
- Simatic Step (hardware configuration) by SiemensSimatic Step is a development environment for configuring and debugging programmable logic controllers in the SIMATIC family of PLCs manufactured by Siemens. Hardware configuration used by Simatic Step is saved in a DMD file. This file format is classified as Settings.
- Visual dBASE (data module) by dBASEVisual dBASE is a discontinued database development environment. A DMD file used by Visual dBASE contains a data module. This file format is classified as Data.
DMD file extension format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DMD files:
The DMD extension is very commonly found and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 45% of all DMD files are Oracle SQL Developer Data Model files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 400 bytes to 560 bytes in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: <?xml version = '1.0' encoding = 'UTF-8'?>, <OSDM_Design class="oracle.dbtools.crest.model.design.Design", name and createdBy. Such files are related to model, data, database, diagram, modelo, design, logical and modeler.
- 15% of all DMD files start with the magic bytes BISDLMS, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 35 KB to 440 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as BISDLMS, ABCD0001 and DATETIME.
All the rest of the DMD files (40%) have different formats, often e.g. JSON, MXPRJ, DMD and DALI. Tagged as dungeon, doodle, homer, profile, energy or dali. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your DMD file!

a dmd database design is a special file format by Oracle and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DMD files
- Associate the DMD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database designs. Because only the current version supports the latest DMD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oracle manufacturer website after an available SQL Developer Data Modeler update.
- To make sure that your DMD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DMD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
