What is a DVI file?

DVI files mostly belong to LaTeX by LaTeX Team. A DVI file is a document saved in the Device-Independent File Format used by TeX-based typesetting systems. It contains binary data which describes a document's layout in a device/software independent format. Unlike other output formats of TeX-based typesetting systems which are readable directly by document viewers, a DVI file must be passed as input to a DVI driver before it is displayed as graphical data. As such, DVI format has the advantage of being vendor independent. However, this means it can't support font-embedding or complicated graphics. LaTeX, GlossTeX, Evince, Okular, and MiKTeX support DVI format.

How to open a DVI file

You need a suitable software like LaTeX to open a DVI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DVI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DVI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DVI file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DVI files:

The DVI extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The file formats most commonly found in DVI files are:

All the rest of the DVI files (8%) have different formats. Files like these are sometimes linked to kriptografi, gennaio, usrguid, primo or small. If you want to find out what your DVI file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with DVI files

  • Associate the DVI file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open documents. Because only the current version supports the latest DVI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the LaTeX Team manufacturer website after an available LaTeX update.
  • To make sure that your DVI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DVI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
