All about FDR Files
The FDR file type is primarily associated with Final Draft.
What is an FDR file
In one common case, an FDR file is a Final Draft screenplay that stores formatted script text. These files are used by screenwriters with the Final Draft software, and more details can be found at the Final Draft website.
Other FDR files contain flight data recorder logs. These files collect technical data from aircraft systems and are accessed with specialized viewers such as the L3 FDR Reader (L3 Harris) or forensic tools like FDRLogViewer.
There are also FDR files that hold financial data records or serve as smart drawings for systems like SmartPlant P&ID, often linked with SAP ERP environments.
How do you open FDR files?
You need a suitable software like Final Draft to open an FDR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FDR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FDR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

FDR file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the FDR files comes to the following conclusion:
FDR is seldom used as a file extension and includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 55% of all FDR files are Final Draft document files. The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. The files are 22 KB to 220 KB in size, with a median of 43 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: 480048, Final Draft, Final Draft, Inc, FFFF0000000600020001 and 9049900. These files are often associated with screenplay, script and life, and usually contain person-related data.
- 6% of all FDR files start with the bytes 4D 01 10 00 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. FDR files are between 1 KB and 230 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 0u0u0u0u.
All other FDR files (39%) have different formats, the following 3 formats exist: FDR. Often described as american or draft. You can get all the details of your FDR file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .fdr file to analyze" above.
