Opening an FLAG File
The FLAG file type is primarily associated with Flag Designer.
What is an FLAG file?
- Flag design file (UTF-16 (LE)): This file is used by FlagMaker's design program to store flag layout information. It may contain structured text data that the proprietary software can interpret.
- Flag configuration file: A file that holds settings or parameters for flag displays, as used by Flag Maker Jr. You can open this file with a basic text editor if you need to inspect the configuration.
- PNG image file: At times a FLAG file is actually a PNG image which may also hide a secret string. Such files are associated with Pico and are common in security challenges. For more details, visit Pico website. They can be viewed with any standard image viewer.
- Executable file (ELF): In some cases the FLAG file is an ELF executable—typically an empty file signifying success on Linux systems. These require Linux tools to run or analyze.
FilExt.com note: The format of your file depends on which internal structure it uses. Checking the file header or using file inspection utilities can help identify its true nature.
How do you open FLAG files?

Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FLAG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FLAG file directly in the browser:. FLAG format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the FLAG files looks like this:
As a file extension, FLAG isn't very common and does not have a uniform file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 15% of all FLAG files use the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 480 bytes to 2 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as color1, division, gridSize, name, ratio=2:3, type=grid, 000000 and color2=ffffff.
- 10% of all FLAG files start with the bytes name=, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The average file size is 440 bytes with most files being between 200 bytes and 600 bytes in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as color1, gridSize, name, Color, color2, size2=1, size1=1, ratio=2:3, size3, color3, ffffff, type=grid, 000000, type=fesses and Rotation.
All other FLAG files (75%) have different formats, often e.g. ELF, ZIP, GZIP and picoCTF. These files sometimes refer to moradon or secret. If you want to find out which format your FLAG file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .flag file to analyze".
