Opening an IM File
The IM file type is primarily associated with Trainz.
What is an IM file?
When used in Trainz, these files include geometry data, texture mapping, and metadata for simulation behavior.
Other uses include:
How do you open IM files?
You need a suitable software like Trainz to open an IM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- Trainz Simulator (medical image) by N3V GAMESIM files ("Indexed Mesh" files) store the mesh data that define the majority of solid geometry in Trainz. The file format was originally developed Auran (now N3V Games) as part of the Auran Jet gaming engine that was used for the original Trainz Simulators. The new E2 engine introduced in TANE also imports from this file format. Related links: Wiki
IM format details:
To find out what program is needed to open IM files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the IM files:
The IM file type is a very commonly used file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 75% of all IM files start with the magic bytes JIRF, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 2 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 450 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The following keywords are characteristic: MATL, onetex, IDXMINFOD, CHNK and JIRF. Such files are related to body, mesh, attach, shadow, asset, loco, exterior, bogie, blue and face.
- 1% of all IM files start with the magic bytes exec , which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 4 MB and 120 MB in size. The keywords VWIM and exec visual -=$0 "$@" are typical for these files.
The remaining 24% of all IM files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, Applix bitmap, GZIP and SPEC. These files are often connected to configsync, linux, image, chinchilla, sensing or track. You can get all the details of your IM file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .im file to view this image" above.

an im 3D model asset file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IM files
- Associate the IM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d model asset files. Because only the current version supports the latest IM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Trainz update.
- To make sure that your IM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
