Opening an INST File
The INST file type is primarily associated with DetLive.
What is an INST file
An INST file stores specific instructions used during software installation. It can hold details that tell an installer what files to load or how to set up a plugin. For example, a .NET version acts as a DetLive plugin installer for FDetLive software.
Some INST files are packaged as a ZIP archive containing a template installation archive, which simplifies software setup. Others come as plain installation files that may include definitions needed for 3D model instances. A further variant uses the JSON format to carry command data such as that for game operations, as seen with Modern Air Naval Operations (Modern Air Naval Operations).
Always use the correct tool: a .NET environment for the plugin installer, a ZIP extractor for compressed archives, or a text editor for JSON content.
- .NET variant: Used as a plugin installer.
- ZIP variant: Contains a template installation archive.
- Plain file: Holds installation or 3D model instance data.
- JSON variant: Carries game command data.
How do you open INST files?
You need a suitable software like DetLive to open an INST file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your INST file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a INST file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert INST files:
- DetLive
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. INST files are often referred to as DetLive data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 3D Graphic
- Object Oriented Graphics Library (OOGL)
INST file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the INST files:
The INST file extension is not common and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in INST files are:
- 25% of all INST files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one INST file. Such a ZIP file contains 3 to 12 files with names like template_source.ts. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. INST files can be up to 29 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 17 KB. The keywords originRes, sfdl and FLOW are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are TEMPLATE_SGAC9710A001_SAMPLE_20180601.inst or TEMPLATE_SGACTESTA001_SAMPLE_20180601.inst. Such files are related to template, sample, sgac and sgactesta.
- 10% of all INST files are using the well-known .NET file format to store the data. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 700 KB. The keywords <Id>k__BackingField, <nombre>k__, ADetLive.Dominio.DominioActualizaciones.Entidades.PluginInstalable and FDetLive.Dominio, Version=4.0.9.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null are typical for these files. ISR-NAT.Inst is a typical file name.
The remaining 65% of all INST files are files with no common format, such as JSON. Files like these are sometimes linked to calypso. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your INST file!
Technical Data for INST File Extension
an inst installation file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with INST files
- Associate the INST file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open installation files. Because only the current version supports the latest INST file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available DetLive update.
- To make sure that your INST file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .INST file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
