What is an ISM file?

ISM files mostly belong to IIS by Microsoft. ISM filename extension is associated with Internet Information Services (IIS) Smooth Streaming manifest files used to store track and bitrate information of ISMA (IIS Smooth Streaming Audio) and ISMV (IIS Smooth Streaming Video) files. The contents of ISM files are saved in XML format and used to determine the quality and bitrate used to play multimedia after checking the network speed of a client. ISM filename extension is also associated with installation package projects created with InstallShield, a program installer for Windows. Such ISM files contain source code, installer dialog settings, and license data stored in binary or XML format and used to build an installation package. How to open ISM files

You need a suitable software like IIS to open an ISM file. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes".
