Opening a LOC File
The LOC file type is primarily associated with EasyGPS.
What is a LOC file?
- Main Usage: The files with LOC format used by EasyGPS may store places of interest, favourite locations, saved or recent locations etc. These files are usually saved in XML format. These files are primarily used to store a set of locations with their view directions and can also be used to represent the position and orientation of a camera in the real or virtual world. It is a simple yet customisable format that allows the environment to control the parameters for user convenience.
- Content Structure in LOC files:
- The LOC are store in the following format:
<locations-file file-format-version="1.0">
<div style="margin-left: 2em"><location> <div style="margin-left: 2em"> <name> Name </Name> <point1> X,Y,Z</point1> <point2> X,Y,Z</point2> </div></location> ...</div></locations-file>
<div style="margin-left: 2em"> Here, Name is a string used to identify the locations. </div> <div style="margin-left: 2em"> X and Y are the latitude and longitude coordinates. Z is the elevation of each point (in metres). </div> <div style="margin-left: 2em"> <Point1> is the starting location and <point2> is the destination. And the vector from <point1> to <point2> is the view direction. </div>

LOC file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the LOC files comes to the following conclusion:
The LOC file extension is quite common and has no uniform or dominant file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in LOC files:
- 7% of all LOC files use the same file format, which have the signature LOC. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. LOC files are between 660 bytes and 340 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The files contain the following words: LOCH and LOCL. Some examples of file names are ENG_US.loc or Locale_English.loc. Such files are related to locale and english.
- 5% of all LOC files save the data in XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 3 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: name id, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <record id="Localization, <table>, Localization Points, coord lat, <carlson_xml version="1.0">, <value name="Lat", <waypoint>, CDATA, <loc version="1.0" src="Groundspeak"> and lon. A common filename is geocaching.loc.
All other LOC files (88%) have no consistent format, often e.g. Topografix, UTF-8, UTF-16 (LE), EXE, zlib, PRD and http. Tagged as languagedata, spotlight, sibu, languages, russian or source. If you want to find out what your LOC file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
