What is an MG file?

MG files mostly belong to Meshroom. The MG file is used in several specialized workflows.
Primary use: It is mainly a Meshroom 3D reconstruction project file. These files store parameters and data (often in JSON format) that guide the photogrammetry process to rebuild a 3D scene from photos.
Other use cases:

MG game script: Used in the KiriKiri engine, these files contain script instructions for game events.

Mobile game image data: Some MG files hold image assets used in mobile games.

3D model packaging: In some cases, a MG file is a compressed (ZIP) archive containing a 3D model – noted as a Magic Lantern file by Magix Movie Edit Pro.

How to open MG files

You need a suitable software like Meshroom to open an MG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MG file directly in the browser:. MG file format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the MG files:

The MG file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 65% of all MG files are using the well-known JSON file format to store the data. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. MG files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 29 KB - 320 KB. The file type was created recently. The keywords "fileVersion": "1.1", "header": {, "nodesVersions": {, "pipelineVersion": "2.2" and "releaseVersion": "2019.2.0" are typical for these files. These files are attributed to model, mesh, rock, meshroom, skull and 3D model.
• 20% of all MG files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "MGSC" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 5 KB to 190 KB in size, with a median of 93 KB. The keywords MGSC and main are typical for these files. An example of a file name is onik_000.mg or omake_01.mg. Such files sometimes refer to flow and tips.
