Opening an MPY File
The MPY file type is primarily associated with MicroPython.
What is an MPY file?
- Purpose: Avoid run‐time compilation, thus boosting performance on embedded systems.
- Usage: They are used as importable modules in MicroPython and CircuitPython projects.
- Functionality: They store precompiled instructions similar to how .pyc files work in standard Python.
FilExt.com notes: Because these files contain binary bytecode, opening them in a regular text editor will only show unreadable data. To run or inspect an MPY file, use a MicroPython or CircuitPython interpreter. Further details are available at the CircuitPython website and the MicroPython website.
How to open MPY files
You need a suitable software like MicroPython to open an MPY file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPY file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPY file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MPY files:
- MicroPython
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MPY files are often referred to as MicroPython executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- RCA/Lyra Handheld MP3 Player File by RCAThis is a secure MP3 format that only plays in this player. Different versions of the player may use .MPX files instead. This file format is classified as Audio.
MPY file format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the MPY files:
The MPY file extension is rather rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The file formats most commonly found in MPY files are:
- 65% of all MPY files use the same file format, which have the signature 4D 03 02 1F. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view the contents and find segments of text. MPY files can be up to 11 KB in size, but are often around 770 bytes - 5 KB. The file type is very recent. The files contain the following words: adafruit, <module> and Keycode. keyboard_layout_us.mpy or __init__.mpy is a typical file name. These files can be linked to adafruit, keyboard, neopixel, layout, init, device and packet.
- 25% of all MPY files use the same file format, which have the signature 43 05 02 1F 20. The contents of these files are partially readable with a text editor. The files are 450 bytes to 1 KB in size, with a median of 990 bytes. The keywords Keycode, adafruit, keycode, keyboard and time are typical for these files. keyboard_layout_us.mpy or keyboard.mpy is a typical file name. Such files sometimes refer to keycode and mouse.
All other MPY files (10%) have different formats. Tagged as control or consumer. Just click the "Choose your .mpy file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your MPY file is.
Technical Data for MPY File Extension
an mpy compiled module file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MPY files
- Associate the MPY file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compiled module files. Because only the current version supports the latest MPY file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available MicroPython update.
- To make sure that your MPY file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MPY file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
