What is an MTA file?

MTA files mostly belong to Flight Simulator by Microsoft. An MTA file contains XML-encoded multimedia metadata generated by AllShare file sharing software. AllShare uses an MTA file during file transfer operations. The file is saved in the same folder as its associated media file. Its base name is the same as the associated multimedia file but with a compound filename extension like .mp4.mta. Another type of MTA file contains maintenance data used by Flight Simulator flight simulation video game for PCs and consoles. MTA is also the filename extension of an acoustic/electronic drum kit for the DTX-MULTI 12 percussion pad.

How to open MTA files

You need a suitable software like Flight Simulator to open an MTA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. MTA file extension format:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as 8H39 ALL   Ver 01.00, @EWAV, EKIT, EROT, YSFC, `EPTN, EUTL, ETRG, DROT, DWAV and DKIT. An example of a file name is 40-Kits-Oct-2012.MTA. Such files are related to kits.
