Opening MTA Files
The MTA file type is primarily associated with Flight Simulator.
What is an MTA file?
How to open MTA files
You need a suitable software like Flight Simulator to open an MTA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MTA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MTA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MTA file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the MTA files is as follows:
MTA is one of the most common file extensions and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all MTA files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "MTAFile" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 4 KB to 18 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: MTAFile. Files like these are about logs, event, application, system, events, crash, security and windows.
- 10% of all MTA files have the same signature 8H39 ALL Ver 01.00 . These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 36 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as 8H39 ALL Ver 01.00, @EWAV, EKIT, EROT, YSFC, `EPTN, EUTL, ETRG, DROT, DWAV and DKIT. An example of a file name is 40-Kits-Oct-2012.MTA. Such files are related to kits.
All the rest of the MTA files (20%) have different formats, frequently e.g. XML, DOC, FSmta and STARTUMS. These files are often connected to error, umsaetze, errors, operational, server, viewer or video. If you want to find out what your MTA file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with MTA files
- Associate the MTA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open maintenance data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MTA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Flight Simulator update.
- To make sure that your MTA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
