What is an NTFS file?

NTFS files mostly belong to 7-Zip by Igor Pavlov. An NTFS file is a disk (system) image cloned from a hard disk on which Windows operating system has been installed. The NTFS (New Technology File System) was introduced as the default Windows file system in Windows NT version 3.1. It supersedes the FAT file system which was originally used by Windows. NTFS provides journaling support and assigns a security descriptor which specifies the owner and access control lists to all each of its files and folders. An NTFS image cloned from a Windows system can be opened with archive managers such as 7-Zip and NTFS for Mac.

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file.
