What is an ODS file?

ODS files mostly belong to Calc by Apache. An ODS file is a spreadsheet saved in OpenDocument format. This spreadsheet is actually a compressed ZIP archive comprising XML documents with fields of text, formulae, and embedded media. The contents of an ODS file are organized into columns and rows. The file also saves information about the author of the spreadsheet. Excel and other spreadsheet processing applications also support ODS spreadsheets. Spreadsheets saved in OpenDocument format are sometimes saved in FODS files. OpenDocument format is an OASIS standard for authoring and distributing office documents.

How to open ODS files

You need a suitable software like Calc to open an ODS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ODS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ODS file directly in the browser:. How to convert an ODS file to XLS, XLSX, ODS, CSV, TXT, PDF, ...

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The average file size is 20 KB with most files being between 5 KB and 86 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. mimetypeapplication/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheetPK and Configurations2. These files are attributed to list, form, roster, data, grades, planning, classic and sheet.
