What is an ODT file?
How do you open ODT files?
You need a suitable software like Writer to open an ODT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ODT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ODT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ODT file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the ODT files:
The ODT extension is very commonly used. This ODT file itself is among the most popular common file types and predominantly uses a uniform format. The file formats most commonly found in ODT files are:
- 95% of all ODT files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one ODT file. The 6 to 19 compressed files are called content.xml, manifest.rdf, meta.xml, mimetype, settings.xml, styles.xml, \Configurations2\, \Configurations2\accelerator\, \Configurations2\floater\, \Configurations2\images\, \Configurations2\images\Bitmaps\, \Configurations2\menubar\, \Configurations2\popupmenu\, \Configurations2\progressbar\, \Configurations2\statusbar\, \Configurations2\toolbar\, \Configurations2\toolpanel\ and \META-INF\manifest.xml. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are often between 8 KB and 280 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: mimetypeapplication/vnd.oasis.opendocument.textPK and Configurations2. Such ODT files store data about document, facture, letter, report, open, form, fiche and tema.
- 1% of all ODT files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 00020906-0000-0000-c000-000000000046 or 00020900-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains several sections with names like CompObj, DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation, WordDocument, Ole and 1Table. The files are often between 12 KB and 190 KB in size.
The remaining 4% of all ODT files are files with no common format, the following 7 formats exist: PDF, HTML, Mac2OSX, XML and DRMONE. They are often associated with lebenslauf, tulo, lettre, docx, template, tarea or text. If you want to find out what your ODT file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with ODT files
- Associate the ODT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open documents. Because only the current version supports the latest ODT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Apache manufacturer website after an available Writer update.
- To make sure that your ODT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ODT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
