Opening a PDL File
The PDL file type is primarily associated with C++ Builder.
What is a PDL file?
How can I open a PDL file?
You need a suitable software like C++ Builder to open a PDL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PDL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PDL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PDL files:
- C++ Builder by Embarcadero
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PDL files are often referred to as C++ Builder developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Print Shop (project) by BroderbundPrint Shop is a graphics design and desktop publishing software for Windows. It saves a project in a PDL file. This file format is classified as Data.
- QDX Visual Studio (script) by QuovadxQDX Visual Studio is a discontinued rapid application development environment. It uses a PDL file containing a script written in a Programmable Driver Language. This file format is classified as Developer.
- Symbian (printer driver) by NokiaSymbian is a discontinued smartphone operating system that supports multitasking. Its printer driver is saved in a PDL file. This file format is classified as System.
- WITE32 (data) by GuzikWITE32 is a discontinued integrated test environment for Visual Basic and C++. It saves some data in a PDL file. This file format is classified as Data.
PDL file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PDL files produces the following result:
The PDL file ending includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in PDL files are:
- 45% of all PDL files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The app name of a PDL file is Grafexe. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 0b7466a0-3457-11ce-9e08-0020af363645. The file contains sections that are named something like APBlobStreamV2, Contents, DynamicsStream, SummaryInformation, AP_INPROC_ADMIN, AP_INPROC_PCODE, AP_INPROC_SCODE, apc, DocumentSummaryInformation, FaceplateSummary and XrefSummary. The files are 42 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 380 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. These files are attributed to overview, screen, parameter and standard.
- 6% of all PDL files start with the bytes YREC Setting Data Version 1.0, which are crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are 21 KB to 36 KB in size, with a median of 27 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Setting Data, YREC and Version 1.03.00.
All other PDL files (49%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. The Print Shop Deluxe Letterhead, IIII, DGSEC and PrintShopDeluxe. Sometimes used for wichianbutra, pressure or invc. If you want to find out which format your PDL file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .pdl file to analyze".

a pdl project is a special file format by Embarcadero and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PDL files
- Associate the PDL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open projects. Because only the current version supports the latest PDL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Embarcadero manufacturer website after an available C++ Builder update.
- To make sure that your PDL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PDL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
