What is an SKP file?

SKP files mostly belong to SketchUp by Trimble. SKP is the default format for saving files containing 3D models and designs created using SketchUp, a 3D modeling software. SKP files created with SketchUp contain wireframes, effects, textures as well as the 3D models that use these assets. Sometimes, the program also stores 3D components and objects such as shutters in SKP files. Sage Accounting, a business accounting and payroll management software uses SKP as a print file format. SSEYO Koan, an outdated music authoring software stored its play file using SKP format. Such SKP files can be opened with Noatikl. COREX, an outdated, Corpus Exploitation software also used SKP files to store orthographic transcriptions with signal linking data in XML format.

How to open SKP files

You need a suitable software like SketchUp to open an SKP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SKP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SKP file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. 98% of all SKP files belong to SketchUp model. The files are using the common file format UTF-16 (LE). UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 210 KB and 70 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords SketchUp Model, meta/model_thumbnail.png, IHDR, CVersionMap, CArcCurve and pHYs are typical for these files. These files are often associated with model, table, sketchup, auto, house, casa, save and plan.
1% of all SKP files save the data in UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes ï»¿ (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 140 KB to 16 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: SketchUp Model.

The remaining 1% of all SKP files are files with no common format, the following 4 formats can be found: ZIP and Mac2OSX. They are often associated with modelo, design, sketch, proyecto, stand or project.
