What is a VEM file

VEM files mostly belong to Micro Vault Virtual Expander by Sony. VEM files are compressed files that are native to Sony's Micro Vault Virtual Expander file compression utility. Sony devised the VEM file format to help save space on its Micro Vault flash drive.

  • Usage: Micro Vault Virtual Expander is installed by default on all Sony Micro Vault flash drives. Once a file is compressed with the program, it gets stored in the VitualExpander_WW folder on the flash drive, with a VEM file extension. As soon as the VEM files are moved out of this folder, automatic decompression takes place and the files are returned back to their original size. This feature enables the storage of about thrice the amount of data on the flash drive compared to what would be possible without compression.
  • Other Uses: VEM file extension is also used by NCH Swift Sound's Vemail program. Vemail is a custom made voice e-mail program that enables the user to record and share voice messages in place of a text message via regular e-mail.

How to open a VEM file

You need a suitable software like Micro Vault Virtual Expander to open a VEM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VEM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VEM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VEM format details:

To find out what program is needed to open VEM files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the VEM files looks like this:

The VEM file extension is quite common and includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

All the rest of the VEM files (5%) have different formats. If you want to find out what your VEM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
