Opening VIR Files
The VIR file type is primarily associated with Kaspersky Total Security.
What is a VIR file?
How do you open VIR files?
You need a suitable software like Kaspersky Total Security from Kaspersky Lab to open a VIR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VIR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VIR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VIR file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the VIR files produces the following result:
VIR is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all VIR files internally utilize the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 100 KB to 13 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. These files are often associated with setup, installer, keygen, memu, monoxidex, ldplayer, engine, apcrw, cheat and auto.
- 10% of all VIR files start with the bytes ©¬½§, which are crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are 830 bytes to 750 KB in size, with a median of 290 KB.
All the rest of the VIR files (25%) have different formats, often, for example, LNK. You can get all the details of your VIR file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .vir file to analyze" above.
