What is a VLM file?

VLM files mostly belong to Ashlar Vellum Cobalt. VLM files are not a single type of file but a label for several specialized data formats.

• Vellum Drafting Drawings: These files store technical drawing data created by Ashlar Vellum Cobalt. They are used in computer‐aided design to hold precise drafting information.
• Laser Marking Job Files: Some VLM files contain job instructions for laser marking machines. They may use a ZIP structure to archive layout details for applications like Laser Marking Studio or QT Modeler.

How do you open VLM files?

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the VLM files produces the following result:

The file type with the extension 'VLM' covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 60% of all VLM files are Ashlar-Vellum Drawing files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 50 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The files contain the following words: winspool and 3NIW. Such VLM files store data about gesellenst and assy.
• 20% of all VLM files use the same file format, which have the signature FF FF 00 00. They consist of unreadable binary data. The file size is in the range of 5 KB to 160 KB.
