Opening a VERSION File
The VERSION file type is primarily associated with Text Editor.
What is a VERSION file?
VERSION files store version information for software, games, and systems. They are not a single format but a label for files that maintain version data in different internal structures.
These files can come in several forms such as:
- Windows Executable: Some files use the EXE format to embed version details. They are used by Windows to identify file builds and revisions. See Microsoft for more details.
- Apple plist: Other files use the plist format (via NSKeyedArchiver) to store version information for macOS and iOS applications. Visit Apple Developer Documentation for additional info.
- JSON: Certain applications, like Kerbal Space Program, use JSON files to keep version data in a structured form. More info is available at Kerbal Space Program.
- Android Studio Files: Some VERSION files are used within Android Studio projects to hold build or version details. Reference materials can be found at Android Studio.
- XML: XML-based version files keep software or system version details in a standardized text format.
- Game Data Files: For example, StarCraft II uses version files to check file compatibility. See StarCraft II for insights.
- Linux Kernel Version File: Some files store kernel version details, a critical element of system information. More at Kernel.org.
FilExt.com tips: This file type is important for version tracking and update processes. The internal structure (EXE, plist, JSON, or XML) requires the correct viewing tool. Text-based formats (JSON, XML, plist) can be opened with a text editor while binary formats (EXE) need a resource viewer.
How to open VERSION files
You need a suitable software like Text Editor to open a VERSION file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VERSION file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VERSION file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VERSION file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the VERSION files looks like this:
The VERSION file extension does not have a uniform file format. The file formats most commonly found in VERSION files are:
- 15% of all VERSION files are based on the popular EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 7 KB to 13 KB in size, with a median of 10 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: !This program cannot be run in DOS mode and Rich. A usual file name is game_player.version or ZosSteamStarter.version. Files like these are sometimes connected to game, starter, player, steam, assets and swtor.
- 10% of all VERSION files are based on the well-known plist file format. A property list file is a structured text file that contains user's settings or macOS apps configuration. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are 140 bytes to 6 KB in size, with a median of 4 KB. The keywords bplist00, NSKeyedArchiver, Troot and X$versionY$archiverT$topX$objects are typical for these files. A common filename is conversation.version or sticker_search_pack.version. Such files sometimes refer to sticker, search and pack.
The remaining 75% of all VERSION files are files with no common format, such as JSON, Linux and cdes. These files are often connected to material, support, design, compressed, androidx or stir. You can get all the details of your VERSION file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .version file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for VERSION File Extension

How to solve problems with VERSION files
- Associate the VERSION file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest VERSION file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Text Editor update.
- To make sure that your VERSION file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
