What is a XAR file

XAR files mostly belong to eXtensible ARchiver by Rob Braun, Landon Fuller, David Leimbach, Kevin Van Vechten. XAR stands for (eXtensible ARchive). It is the native file format for compressed archives created using the xar archiver, an open-source program that was initially developed for OpenDarwin. The format is also used for macOS installation packages and Safari browser extensions. Each file in a XAR archive is compressed separately.

• File Structure for XAR (eXtensible ARchive): The XAR format is divided into three sections:
  • The Header - the binary header contains information about the XML file
  • The Table of Contents - the XML file that contains information about the payload (i.e. all the files in the archive)
  • The Heap - the payload consisting of individually compressed files and other data

• Other Uses: The XAR extension is also used by files of other formats. These include the XAR (eXcel Auto-Recovery) files associated with Excel. These are temporary and hidden files that are auto-saved while a document is open in Excel. If the program crashes, the document is recovered from the XAR file. Another use of the XAR extension is in Xara Photo and Graphics Designer. XAR is the native file format for a file saved by this application. It is an open standard format for vector graphics.

How to open XAR files

You need a suitable software like eXtensible ARchiver to open a XAR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XAR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XAR file directly in the browser:. How to convert XAR files to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, ...

1. To do so, click the "Choose your .xar file to view this image" button above.

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the XAR files comes to the following conclusion:

The XAR file ending is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in XAR files:

• 65% of all XAR files are associated with Xara drawing. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 5 KB to 5 MB in size, with a median of 270 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as XARA, .)10.)-,3:J>36F7,-@WAFLNRSR2>ZaZP`JQRO, JFIF and Xara Designer. Such files are related to logo, gesamteinladung, museum and elspe.
• 15% of all XAR files use ZIP compression, so several files are compressed and saved in one XAR file. A XAR file contains 10 to 80 files, the average being 21. Common included file names are [Content_Types].xml, \_rels\.rels, \docProps\app.xml, \docProps\core.xml, \xl\_rels\workbook.bin.rels, \xl\calcChain.bin, \xl\sharedStrings.bin, \xl\styles.bin, \xl\theme\theme1.xml and \xl\workbook.bin. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are often between 9 KB and 5 MB in size. The files contain the following words: [Content_Types].xml. These files are attributed to snapshot and reader.
