What is an XX file?

XX files mostly belong to ZipGenius by ZipGenius. XX files are 7-bit ASCII (character set containing 128 characters) text files which are encoded through XXEncoding, an encoding method which only utilizes the alphanumeric characters, as well as plus and minus signs.

Main Usage: XX files were primarily created in order to be able to send 7-bit ASCII text files via e-mail without the risk of them getting corrupted. However, due to the fact that XX files were created for older e-mail programs which were unable to recognize binary attatchments, XX files have become largely obsolete as modern e-mail programs are able to inherently support binary file transfers and convert binary attachments automatically, while also not requiring files to be encoded in order for them to be sent. Additionally, XXEncoding is a strategy that converts 8-bit data, such as programs, into a 6-bit format which is utilized for transmission through 6 to 8-bit electronic mail networks. This style of encoding is similar to UUEncoding, which is a form of binary-to-text encoding that originated in many Unix programs such as UUEncode and UUDecode.

How can I open an XX file?

You need a suitable software like ZipGenius to open an XX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
