Opening Z01 Files
The Z01 file type is primarily associated with WinZip.
What is a Z01 file?
- Multi-Volume Archives: Along with regular archives, WinZip is able to create multi-volume archives by splitting a file into segments. All of these segments have a specified size. Splitting a file into a multi-volume archive breaks it into smaller segments for faster file transfer. It can also be useful when data needs to be divided into smaller sections for saving on storage media such as CDs or DVDs.
- Compression Format: Z01 files and all the other segments in the split archive are compressed using the ZIP format, which is a lossless data compression format and is the default format of WinZip.
- Naming: The first segment of the split archive is given the Z01 extension, the second is given the Z02 extension, and so on. The ZIP extension is assigned to the last segment of the archive.
- Related File Formats: The software has the option of creating split archives with ZIPX compression, which is a more advanced compression method. Instead of Z01, the first segment created using this compression method has the ZX01 extension.

Z01 file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below is our analysis of the Z01 files:
The Z01 extension is very commonly found and uses a well-defined format that can be read by many programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 95% of all Z01 files internally use the ZIP format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one Z01 file. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Z01 files can be up to 34 GB in size, but are often around 15 MB - 2 GB. Files like these are about udemy, access, samsungcloud, bookdigg, download, pirate, woman and complete.
- 2% of all Z01 files are based on the well-known DICOM file format. DICOM is short for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. DICOM files are used to store, exchange, and transmit medical images from radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiation therapy, but also personal data about the patient. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 140 KB to 540 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DICM and 1.2.840.10008.5.1.4.1.1.4.
All other Z01 files (3%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. RAR. These files sometimes refer to archive, hide, adobe, build, linux or video. Just click the "Choose your .z01 file to view" button on this page to find out what your Z01 file is.
