What is an AAB file?

AAB files mostly belong to Android Studio. An AAB file is an Android App Bundle that uses an ZIP file structure. It is designed for packaging Android applications for distribution on platforms like Google Play.

How to open AAB files

You need a suitable software like Android Studio to open an AAB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AAB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AAB file directly in the browser:. To find out what program is needed to open AAB files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the AAB files:

The AAB file type is a very commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined AAB format. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 95% of all AAB files internally use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one AAB file. 128 to 180 compressed files with names like \META-INF\MANIFEST.MF, \base\assets.pb, \base\manifest\AndroidManifest.xml, \base\native.pb, \base\res\ and \base\resources.pb are common. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The file size is in the range of 3 MB to 49 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: BundleConfig.pbUT and META-INF/MANIFEST.MF. An example of a file name is app-release.aab or app.aab. These files are attributed to release, signed, debug, android, prod, appbundle, bundle and build.
