What is an AAC file?

AAC files mostly belong to iTunes by Apple. AAC is the filename extension of audio files compressed using Advanced Audio Coding audio compression standard. These files are typically stored in an MPEG-2 Part 7 container which is the default format for distributing iTunes music. Audio files encoded using this standard can have one of several file extensions including AAC, MP4 and 3GP. RAW audio files processed using AAC typically have AAC filename extension while lossy-compressed AAC files use the previously mentioned filename eextensions. A consortium of 13 companies developed AAC as the successor of MP3 format. Compared to MP3, AAC produces better audio quality at the same bit rate. AAC maintains a small footprint by using a pure modified discrete cosine transform algorithm (MDCT) for higher compression efficiency. This contrasts with the hybrid coding algorithm in MP3 compression that partially used fast Fourier transform and MDCT. Apple, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson mobile phones support AAC playback.

How do you open AAC files?

You need a suitable software like iTunes to open an AAC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AAC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AAC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

AAC format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the AAC files:

Files with the AAC extension are quite widely used. This file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

The remaining 31% of all AAC files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. MPEG-2 LC-AAC Audio, PNG and MP3. Tagged as audioclip, fireflies, media or voice. Just click the "Choose your .aac file to play" button on this page to find out what your AAC file is.
