What is an AIFF file?

AIFF files mostly belong to QuickTime by Apple. AIFF is an audio file format developed by Apple. Files saved in this format have AIFF, AIF, or AIFC filename extension. While AIF and AIFF files may contain compressed or uncompressed audio data, AIFC files are only used to store compressed audio. When used in audio production applications, AIFF files can store loop point data and musical notes alongside audio data. This makes AIFF one of the preferred audio formats for hardware audio samplers and music production software. Most AIFF files are uncompressed pulse-code modulation audio. Apple recently introduced a newer version of the AIFF format which uses a little-endian byte order. Compressed AIFF files (AIFC) files support multiple codecs including ima4 and MAC3. The contents of an AIFF file are stored as chunks identified by a chunk ID. iTunes, QuickTime, Media Player, Audacity, and VLC can play audio files saved in AIFF format.

How to open an AIFF file

You need a suitable software like QuickTime to open an AIFF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AIFF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AIFF file directly in the browser:.
